What Happened In Year 1649?

  • January 4, 1649 – English Civil War: The Rump Parliament votes to put Charles I on trial.
  • January 20, 1649 – Charles I of England goes on trial for treason and other “high crimes”.
  • January 30, 1649 – King Charles I of England is beheaded.
  • February 6, 1649 – The claimant King Charles II of England and Scotland is declared King of Great Britain, by the Parliament of Scotland. This move was not followed by the Parliament of England nor the Parliament of Ireland.
  • March 11, 1649 – The Frondeurs and the French sign the Peace of Rueil.
  • May 19, 1649 – An Act of Parliament declaring England a Commonwealth is passed by the Long Parliament. England would be a republic for the next eleven years.
  • September 2, 1649 – The Italian city of Castro is completely destroyed by the forces of Pope Innocent X, ending the Wars of Castro.
  • September 11, 1649 – Siege of Drogheda ends: Oliver Cromwell’s English Parliamentarian troops take the town and execute its garrison.
  • October 11, 1649 – Sack of Wexford: After a ten-day siege, English New Model Army troops (under Oliver Cromwell) stormed the town of Wexford, killing over 2,000 Irish Confederate troops and 1,500 civilians.
  • October 19, 1649 – New Ross town, Co. Wexford, Ireland, surrenders to Oliver Cromwell.
