What Happened In Year 1776?

  • January 10, 1776 – Thomas Paine publishes Common Sense.
  • February 27, 1776 – American Revolutionary War: the Battle of Moore’s Creek Bridge in North Carolina breaks up a Loyalist militia.
  • June 7, 1776 – Richard Henry Lee presents the “Lee Resolution” to the Continental Congress. The motion is seconded by John Adams and leads to the United States Declaration of Independence.
  • June 8, 1776 – American Revolutionary War: Battle of Trois-Rivières – American attackers are driven back at Trois-Rivières, Quebec.
  • June 11, 1776 – The Continental Congress appoints Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, Roger Sherman, and Robert R. Livingston to the Committee of Five to draft a declaration of independence.
  • June 12, 1776 – The Virginia Declaration of Rights is adopted.
  • June 28, 1776 – American Revolutionary War: Thomas Hickey, Continental Army private and bodyguard to General George Washington, is hanged for mutiny and sedition.
  • July 2, 1776 – The Continental Congress adopts a resolution severing ties with Great Britain although the wording of the formal Declaration of Independence is not approved until July 4.
  • July 9, 1776 – George Washington ordered the Declaration of Independence to be read out loud to members of the Continental Army in New York City for the first time.
  • July 11, 1776 – Captain James Cook begins his third voyage.
  • August 10, 1776 – American Revolutionary War: word of the United States Declaration of Independence reaches London.
  • August 27, 1776 – The Battle of Long Island: in what is now Brooklyn, New York, British forces under General William Howe defeat Americans under General George Washington.
  • September 10, 1776 – American Revolutionary War: Nathan Hale volunteers to spy for the Continental Army.
  • September 15, 1776 – American Revolutionary War: British forces land at Kip’s Bay during the New York Campaign.
  • October 9, 1776 – Father Francisco Palou founds Mission San Francisco de Asis in what is now San Francisco, California.
  • October 28, 1776 – American Revolutionary War: Battle of White Plains – British Army forces arrive at White Plains, attack and capture Chatterton Hill from the Americans.
  • December 5, 1776 – At The College of William and Mary, Phi Beta Kappa is founded and becomes the first American college fraternity.
  • December 7, 1776 – Marquis de Lafayette arranges to enter the American military as a major general.
  • December 19, 1776 – Thomas Paine publishes one of a series of pamphlets in the Pennsylvania Journal titled The American Crisis.
  • December 26, 1776 – American Revolutionary War: The British are defeated in the Battle of Trenton.
