  • January 3, 1782 – Sylhet District in north-east Bangladesh is established
  • January 5, 1782 – American Revolutionary War: French troops begin a siege of a British garrison on Brimstone Hill in Saint Kitts.
  • January 7, 1782 – The first American commercial bank, the Bank of North America, opens.
