What Happened In Year 1789?
- February 4, 1789 – George Washington is unanimously elected as the first President of the United States by the U.S. Electoral College.
- March 4, 1789 – In New York City, the first Congress of the United States meets, putting the United States Constitution into effect.
- April 1, 1789 – In New York City, the United States House of Representatives holds its first quorum and elects Frederick Muhlenberg of Pennsylvania as its first House Speaker.
- April 28, 1789 – Mutiny on the Bounty: Lieutenant William Bligh and 18 sailors are set adrift and the rebel crew returns to Tahiti briefly and then sets sail for Pitcairn Island.
- May 5, 1789 – In France, the Estates-General convenes for the first time since 1614.
- June 8, 1789 – James Madison introduces twelve proposed amendments to the United States Constitution in the House of Representatives; by 1791, ten of them are ratified by the state legislatures and become the Bill of Rights; another is eventually ratified in 1992 to become the 27th Amendment.
- June 14, 1789 – Whiskey distilled from maize is first produced by American clergyman the Rev Elijah Craig. It is named Bourbon because Rev Craig lived in Bourbon County, Kentucky.
- June 20, 1789 – Deputies of the French Third Estate take the Tennis Court Oath.
- July 9, 1789 – In Versailles, the National Assembly reconstitutes itself as the National Constituent Assembly and begins preparations for a French constitution.
- July 14, 1789 – Alexander Mackenzie finally completes his journey to the mouth of the great river he hoped would take him to the Pacific, but which turns out to flow into the Arctic Ocean. Later named after him, the Mackenzie is the second-longest river system in North America.
- August 26, 1789 – The Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen is approved by the National Constituent Assembly of France.
- August 28, 1789 – William Herschel discovers a new moon of Saturn.
- September 15, 1789 – The United States Department of State is established (formerly known as the “Department of Foreign Affairs”).
- September 24, 1789 – The United States Congress passes the Judiciary Act which creates the office of the United States Attorney General and the federal judiciary system, and orders the composition of the Supreme Court of the United States.
- September 29, 1789 – The United States Department of War first establishes a regular army with a strength of several hundred men.
- October 5, 1789 – French Revolution: Women of Paris march to Versailles in the March on Versailles to confront Louis XVI about his refusal to promulgate the decrees on the abolition of feudalism, demand bread, and have the King and his court moved to Paris.
- October 6, 1789 – French Revolution: Louis XVI returns to Paris from Versailles after being confronted by the Parisian women on 5 October
- November 6, 1789 – Pope Pius VI appoints Father John Carroll as the first Catholic bishop in the United States.
- November 21, 1789 – North Carolina ratifies the United States Constitution and is admitted as the 12th U.S. state.
