What Happened In Year 1789?
- January 23, 1789 – Georgetown College, the first Catholic University in the United States, is founded in Georgetown, Maryland (now a part of Washington, D.C.)
- April 28, 1789 – Mutiny on the Bounty: Lieutenant William Bligh and 18 sailors are set adrift and the rebel crew returns to Tahiti briefly and then sets sail for Pitcairn Island.
- April 30, 1789 – On the balcony of Federal Hall on Wall Street in New York City, George Washington takes the oath of office to become the first elected President of the United States.
- May 5, 1789 – In France, the Estates-General convenes for the first time since 1614.
- June 17, 1789 – In France, the Third Estate declares itself the National Assembly.
- June 20, 1789 – Deputies of the French Third Estate take the Tennis Court Oath.
- July 9, 1789 – In Versailles, the National Assembly reconstitutes itself as the National Constituent Assembly and begins preparations for a French constitution.
- July 14, 1789 – French Revolution: citizens of Paris storm the Bastille.
- August 4, 1789 – In France members of the National Constituent Assembly take an oath to end feudalism and abandon their privileges.
- August 26, 1789 – The Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen is approved by the National Constituent Assembly of France.
- August 28, 1789 – William Herschel discovers a new moon of Saturn.
- September 11, 1789 – Alexander Hamilton is appointed the first United States Secretary of the Treasury.
- September 15, 1789 – The United States Department of State is established (formerly known as the “Department of Foreign Affairs”).
- September 22, 1789 – Battle of Rymnik establishes Alexander Suvorov as a pre-eminent Russian military commander after his allied army defeat superior Ottoman Empire forces.
- September 24, 1789 – The United States Congress passes the Judiciary Act which creates the office of the United States Attorney General and the federal judiciary system, and orders the composition of the Supreme Court of the United States.
- September 25, 1789 – The U.S. Congress passes twelve amendments to the United States Constitution: the Congressional Apportionment Amendment (which was never ratified), the Congressional Compensation Amendment, and the ten that are known as the Bill of Rights.
- October 2, 1789 – George Washington sends the proposed Constitutional amendments (The United States Bill of Rights) to the States for ratification.
- October 3, 1789 – George Washington made the first Thanksgiving Day designated by the national government of the United States of America.
- November 20, 1789 – New Jersey becomes the first U.S. state to ratify the Bill of Rights.
- November 21, 1789 – North Carolina ratifies the United States Constitution and is admitted as the 12th U.S. state.
