What Happened In Year 1821?

  • January 28, 1821 – Alexander Island is first discovered by Fabian Gottlieb von Bellingshausen.
  • March 25, 1821 – (Julian Calendar) Traditional date of the start of the Greek War of Independence. The war had actually began since 23 February 1821. The date was chosen in the early years of the Greek state so that it falls on the day of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, strengthening the ties between the Greek Orthodox Church and the newly-found state.
  • April 10, 1821 – Patriarch Gregory V of Constantinople is hanged by the Ottoman government from the main gate of the Patriarchate and his body is thrown into the Bosphorus.
  • May 8, 1821 – Greek War of Independence: The Greeks defeat the Turks at the Battle of Gravia.
  • May 12, 1821 – The first big battle of the Greek War of Independence against the Turks occurs in Valtetsi.
  • June 19, 1821 – Decisive defeat of the Philikí Etaireía by the Ottomans at Drăgăşani (in Wallachia).
  • June 24, 1821 – The Battle of Carabobo takes place. It is the decisive battle in the war of independence of Venezuela from Spain.
  • July 9, 1821 – 470 prominent Cypriots including Archbishop Kyprianos are executed in response to Cypriot aid to the Greek War of Independence
  • July 10, 1821 – The United States takes possession of its newly bought territory of Florida from Spain.
  • July 28, 1821 – José de San Martín declares the independence of Peru from Spain.
  • August 4, 1821 – Atkinson & Alexander publish the Saturday Evening Post for the first time as a weekly newspaper.
  • August 10, 1821 – Missouri is admitted as the 24th U.S. state.
  • August 19, 1821 – Greek rebels massacre all the population of Navarino.
  • August 21, 1821 – Jarvis Island is discovered by the crew of the ship, Eliza Frances.
  • August 24, 1821 – The Treaty of Córdoba is signed in Córdoba, now in Veracruz, Mexico, concluding the Mexican War of Independence from Spain.
  • August 26, 1821 – The University of Buenos Aires, Argentina, is oficially opened.
  • September 15, 1821 – Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Costa Rica jointly declare independence from Spain.
  • September 23, 1821 – Tripolitsa, Greece, falls and 30,000 Turks are massacred during the Greek War of Independence.
  • October 8, 1821 – The government of general José de San Martín establishes the Peruvian Navy.
  • November 10, 1821 – Cry of Independence by Rufina Alfaro at La Villa de Los Santos, Panama setting into motion a revolt which lead to Panama’s independence from Spain and to it immediately becoming part of Colombia
