  • January 1, 1845 – The Cobble Hill Tunnel in Brooklyn is completed.
  • January 29, 1845 – “The Raven” is published in the New York Evening Mirror, the first publication with the name of the author, Edgar Allan Poe
  • March 1, 1845 – President John Tyler signs a bill authorizing the United States to annex the Republic of Texas.
  • March 3, 1845 – Florida is admitted as the 27th U.S. state.
  • March 11, 1845 – The Flagstaff War: Unhappy with translational differences regarding the Treaty of Waitangi, chiefs Hone Heke, Kawiti and Māori tribe members chop down the British flagpole for a fourth time and drive settlers out of Kororareka, New Zealand.
  • March 13, 1845 – Felix Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto receives its première performance in Leipzig with Ferdinand David as soloist.
  • May 19, 1845 – Captain Sir John Franklin and his ill-fated Arctic expedition depart from Greenhithe, England.
  • August 6, 1845 – The Russian Geographical Society is founded in Saint Petersburg.
  • August 28, 1845 – The first issue of Scientific American magazine is published.
  • September 23, 1845 – The Knickerbockers Baseball Club, the first baseball team to play under the modern rules, is founded in New York.
  • October 9, 1845 – The eminent and controversial Anglican, John Henry Newman, is received into the Roman Catholic Church.
  • October 10, 1845 – In Annapolis, Maryland, the Naval School (later renamed the United States Naval Academy) opens with 50 midshipman students and seven professors.
  • October 13, 1845 – A majority of voters in the Republic of Texas approve a proposed constitution, that if accepted by the U.S. Congress, will make Texas a U.S. state.
  • November 20, 1845 – Anglo-French blockade of the Río de la Plata: Battle of Vuelta de Obligado.
  • December 2, 1845 – Manifest Destiny: US President James K. Polk announces to Congress that the United States should aggressively expand into the West.
  • December 27, 1845 – Ether anesthetic is used for childbirth for the first time by Dr. Crawford Williamson Long in Jefferson, Georgia.
  • December 29, 1845 – In accordance with International Boundary delimitation, United States annexes the Mexican state of Texas, following the Manifest Destiny doctrine. The Republic of Texas, which had been independent since the Texas Revolution of 1836, is thereupon admitted as the 28th U.S. state.
