- January 1, 1863 – The first claim under the Homestead Act is made by Daniel Freeman for a farm in Nebraska.
- January 9, 1863 – American Civil War: the Battle of Fort Hindman begins in Arkansas.
- January 10, 1863 – The London Underground, the world’s oldest underground railway, opens between London Paddington station and Farringdon station.
- January 29, 1863 – Bear River Massacre.
- February 10, 1863 – The fire extinguisher is patented.
- April 16, 1863 – American Civil War: The Siege of Vicksburg – ships led by Union Admiral David Dixon Porter move through heavy Confederate artillery fire on approach to Vicksburg, Mississippi.
- May 1, 1863 – American Civil War: The Battle of Chancellorsville begins.
- May 12, 1863 – American Civil War: Battle of Raymond: two divisions of James B. McPherson’s XVII Corps (ACW) turn the left wing of Confederate General John C. Pemberton’s defensive line on Fourteen Mile Creek, opening up the interior of Mississippi to the Union Army during the Vicksburg Campaign.
- May 14, 1863 – American Civil War: The Battle of Jackson takes place.
- June 14, 1863 – Second Assault on the Confederate works at the Siege of Port Hudson during the American Civil War.
- July 4, 1863 – American Civil War: Siege of Vicksburg – Vicksburg, Mississippi surrenders to Ulysses S. Grant after 47 days of siege. 150 miles up the Mississippi River, a Confederate Army is repulsed at the Battle of Helena, Arkansas.
- July 7, 1863 – United States begins its first military draft; exemptions cost $300.
- July 30, 1863 – Indian Wars: Chief Pocatello of the Shoshone tribe signs the Treaty of Box Elder, agreeing to stop the harassment of emigrant trails in southern Idaho and northern Utah.
- September 8, 1863 – American Civil War: Second Battle of Sabine Pass – on the Texas-Louisiana border at the mouth of the Sabine River, a small Confederate force thwarts a Union invasion of Texas.
- October 29, 1863 – Eighteen countries meet in Geneva and agree to form the International Red Cross.
- October 30, 1863 – Danish Prince Wilhelm arrives in Athens to assume his throne as George I, King of the Hellenes.
- November 18, 1863 – King Christian IX of Denmark decides to sign the November constitution that declares Schleswig to be part of Denmark. This is seen by the German Confederation as a violation of the London Protocol and leads to the German–Danish war of 1864.
- November 24, 1863 – American Civil War: Battle of Lookout Mountain – Near Chattanooga, Tennessee, Union forces under General Ulysses S. Grant capture Lookout Mountain and begin to break the Confederate siege of the city led by General Braxton Bragg.
- November 27, 1863 – American Civil War: Confederate cavalry leader John Hunt Morgan and several of his men escape the Ohio Penitentiary and return safely to the South.
- December 16, 1863 – American Civil War: Joseph E. Johnston replaces Braxton Bragg as commander of the Army of Tennessee.
