  • January 18, 2000 – The Tagish Lake meteorite impacts the Earth.
  • February 5, 2000 – New Year’s Day in Chinese calendar. Start of the year of the Metal Dragon in Chinese astrology.
  • March 20, 2000 – Jamil Abdullah Al-Amin, a former Black Panther once known as H. Rap Brown, is captured after murdering Georgia sheriff’s deputy Ricky Kinchen and critically wounding Deputy Aldranon English.
  • April 22, 2000 – Second Battle of Elephant Pass: Tamil Tigers capture a strategic Sri Lankan Army base and hold it for 8 years.
  • May 2, 2000 – President Bill Clinton announces that accurate GPS access would no longer be restricted to the United States military.
  • May 11, 2000 – Second Chechen War: Chechen separatists ambush Russian paramilitary forces in the Republic of Ingushetia.
  • May 24, 2000 – Israeli troops withdraw from southern Lebanon after 22 years of occupation.
  • June 16, 2000 – Israel complies with UN Security Council Resolution 425 after 22 years of it issuance, which calls on Israel to completely withdraw from Lebanon. Israel withdraws from all of Lebanon, except the disputed Shebaa Farms.
  • July 2, 2000 – Vicente Fox Quesada is elected the first President of México from an opposition party, the Partido Acción Nacional, after more than 70 years of continuous rule by the Partido Revolucionario Institucional.
  • September 26, 2000 – The MS Express Samina sinks off Paros in the Agean sea killing 80 passengers.
  • October 12, 2000 – The USS Cole is badly damaged in Aden, Yemen, by two suicide bombers, killing 17 crew members and wounding at least 39
  • October 26, 2000 – Laurent Gbagbo takes over as president of Côte d'Ivoire following a popular uprising against President Robert Guéï.
  • October 31, 2000 – A Singapore Airlines Boeing 747-400 operating as Flight 006 collides with construction equipment upon takeoff in Taipei, Taiwan killing 79 passengers and four crew members.
  • November 7, 2000 – The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration discovers one of the country’s largest LSD labs inside a converted military missile silo in Wamego, Kansas.
  • November 15, 2000 – Jharkhand state comes into existence in India.
  • November 16, 2000 – Bill Clinton becomes the first U.S. President to visit Vietnam since the end of the Vietnam War.
  • November 17, 2000 – A catastrophic landslide in Log pod Mangartom, Slovenia, kills 7, and causes millions of SIT of damage. It is one of the worst catastrophes in Slovenia in the past 100 years.
  • December 28, 2000 – U.S. retail giant Montgomery Ward announces it is going out of business after 128 years.
