  • February 14, 2000 – The spacecraft NEAR Shoemaker enters orbit around asteroid 433 Eros, the first spacecraft to orbit an asteroid.
  • March 10, 2000 – The NASDAQ Composite stock market index peaks at 5132.52, signaling the beginning of the end of the dot-com boom.
  • March 27, 2000 – A Phillips Petroleum plant explosion in Pasadena, Texas kills 1 and injures 71.
  • March 28, 2000 – Three children are killed when a Murray County, Georgia, school bus is hit by a CSX freight train.
  • April 22, 2000 – In a pre-dawn raid, federal agents seize six-year-old Elián González from his relatives’ home in Miami, Florida.
  • May 24, 2000 – Israeli troops withdraw from southern Lebanon after 22 years of occupation.
  • June 21, 2000 – Section 28 (of the Local Government Act 1988), outlawing the ‘promotion’of homosexuality in the United Kingdom, is repealed in Scotland with a 99 to 17 vote.

  • November 17, 2000 – A catastrophic landslide in Log pod Mangartom, Slovenia, kills 7, and causes millions of SIT of damage. It is one of the worst catastrophes in Slovenia in the past 100 years.
  • November 25, 2000 – The 2000 Baku Earthquake takes place, Richter magnitude of 7.0, leaving 26 people dead in Baku, Azerbaijan and becoming the strongest earthquake in the region in 158 years.

  • December 13, 2000 – The “Texas 7” escape from the John Connally Unit near Kenedy, Texas and go on a robbery spree, during which police officer Aubrey Hawkins is shot and killed.
  • December 24, 2000 – The Texas 7 hold up a sports store in Irving, Texas. Police officer Aubrey Hawkins is murdered during the robbery.
