- January 15, 2009 – US Airways Flight 1549 makes an emergency landing in the Hudson River shortly after takeoff from LaGuardia Airport in New York City. All passengers and crew members survive.
- January 23, 2009 – Dendermonde nursery attack in Dendermonde, Belgium.
- January 26, 2009 – New Year’s Day in Chinese calendar. Start of the year of the Earth Ox in Chinese astrology.
- March 4, 2009 – The International Criminal Court (ICC) issues an arrest warrant for Sudanese President Omar Hassan al-Bashir for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Darfur. Al-Bashir is the first sitting head of state to be indicted by the ICC since its establishment in 2002.
- March 27, 2009 – A suicide bomber kills at least 48 at a mosque in the Khyber Agency of Pakistan.
- April 10, 2009 – President of Fiji Ratu Josefa Iloilo announces he will suspend the constitution and assume all governance in the country, creating a constitutional crisis.
- April 25, 2009 – Zach Daniels made his debut in professional wrestling against Jason Blackman.
- May 1, 2009 – Same-sex marriage is legalized in Sweden.
- May 18, 2009 – Sri Lankan Civil War: The LTTE are defeated by the Sri Lankan government, ending almost 26 years of fighting between the two sides.
- June 1, 2009 – Air France Flight 447 crashes into the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Brazil on a flight from Rio de Janeiro to Paris. All 228 passengers and crew are killed.
- June 22, 2009 – Washington Metro train collision: Two Metro trains collide in Washington, D.C., USA, killing nine and injuring over 80.
- June 30, 2009 – Yemenia Flight 626 crashes into the Indian Ocean, near Comoros, killing all but one of the 153 passengers and crew on board.
- July 4, 2009 – The Statue of Liberty’s crown reopens to the public after 8 years, due to security reasons following the World Trade Center attacks.
- July 5, 2009 – The largest hoard of Anglo-Saxon gold ever discovered, consisting of more than 1,500 items, is found near the village of Hammerwich, near Lichfield, in Staffordshire, England.
- July 24, 2009 – The MV Arctic Sea, reportedly carrying a cargo of timber, is allegedly hijacked in the North Sea by pirates, but much speculation remains as to the actual cargo and events.
- August 10, 2009 – Twenty people are killed in Handlová, Trenčín Region, in the deadliest mining disaster in Slovakia’s history.
- August 27, 2009 – The Burmese military junta and ethnic armies begin three days of violent clashes in the Kokang Special Region.
- November 5, 2009 – US Army Major Nidal Malik Hasan kills 13 and wounds 29 at Fort Hood, Texas in the deadliest mass shooting at a US military installation.
- November 17, 2009 – Administrators at the Climatic Research Unit at the University of East Anglia discover their servers had been hacked and thousands of emails and files on climate change had been stolen, which would serve as the basis of the “Climategate” controversy.
- December 15, 2009 – Boeing’s new Boeing 787 Dreamliner makes its maiden flight from Seattle, Washington.
