- January 3, 1861 – American Civil War: Delaware votes not to secede from the United States.
- January 9, 1861 – Mississippi becomes the second state to secede from the Union before the outbreak of the American Civil War.
- January 10, 1861 – American Civil War: Florida secedes from the Union.
- January 19, 1861 – American Civil War: Georgia joins South Carolina, Florida, Mississippi, and Alabama in seceding from the United States.
- February 11, 1861 – American Civil War: United States House of Representatives unanimously passes a resolution guaranteeing noninterference with slavery in any state.
- February 27, 1861 – Russian troops fire on a crowd in Warsaw protesting against Russian rule over Poland, killing five protesters.

- August 10, 1861 – American Civil War: Battle of Wilson’s Creek – the war enters Missouri when a band of raw Confederate troops defeat Union forces in the southwestern part of the state.
- October 23, 1861 – U.S. President Abraham Lincoln suspends the writ of habeas corpus in Washington, D.C., for all military-related cases.
- October 25, 1861 – The Toronto Stock Exchange is created.
- November 1, 1861 – American Civil War: US President Abraham Lincoln appoints George B. McClellan as the commander of the Union Army, replacing General Winfield Scott.
- November 2, 1861 – American Civil War: Western Department Union General John C. Fremont is relieved of command and replaced by David Hunter.
- December 26, 1861 – American Civil War: The Trent Affair: Confederate diplomatic envoys James M. Mason and John Slidell are freed by the United States government, thus heading off a possible war between the United States and United Kingdom.
